Collection: Etchings

Etching onto a plate is a very old, traditional printing process.  It's laborious, complicated and messy, and for 50 years, I have used this process to express, with line, my themes of family, friends, landscapes, botanical studies, and a few therapeutic exercises.  Some offer a whimsical snapshot image, others explore the subject in exaggerated detail and employ symbolic metaphors to enhance their story.

Each etching is considered an original, a hand-pulled etching.  I draw the image onto the plate and etch it in an acid bath.  When  I am satisfied with the image, I print the image onto special etching paper that is hand ripped to create a deckled edge on all sides..  The plate is inked and wiped, leaving the image in the lines, paper is placed on top, and run through my custom built etching press.  They are all a "Limited Edition" or fixed number of prints, from one plate, signed in pencil.

If you are interested in more details of the etching process, I have written a summary of the procedure.  Within each etching edition the individual etchings may vary according to the various etching papers and inks used. I have posted one etching from each edition, with the lowest number in the edition, but you can inquire about more available in the edition.  Colored editions are hand water-colored with some small variations among each print.  Some botanical etchings,  I purposely explored different color schemes.
